2016 seems to be a year where I am mostly excited about sequels. At the beginning of the year, the games I'm most excited about are XCOM 2 (playing currently), Dark Souls 3, Kingdom Hearts 2.8 and 3 (not holding my breath), and Bravely Second. I've been watching some XCOM on YouTube to scratch that itch, so I decided to play through Dark Souls. I've been through a couple times, but haven't played since the game was migrated to Steam servers. So, I didn't have any achievements. What a tragedy! So I decided to get all of the achievements.

Visual: This game is a bit dated looking, but that's pretty deserved after 5 years I think. I wouldn't say that the game looks bad by any means, just not pretty. I really like the spell effects and fire effects though. I strongly dislike how bright the lava is, but I think that's my only complaint really. The enemies in this game are very cool looking and varied, which is excellent.

Audio: I'll be honest, I was mostly listening to other stuff, so I didn't notice it too much this time through. I remember the music being pretty good overall though. Occasionally, I still listen to the Firelink Shrine music. It's so... lonely sounding. It's brilliant!

Gameplay: Pretty good, but I like the later iterations a bit better. They refine the formula in ways that I think make them more enjoyable. In order to finish all of the achievements you need to make it to Anor Londo on NG++, which is your third time through the game. This was my first time doing any NG+'s and I have to say I was a little disappointed. The difficulty drops off pretty substantially after the final boss. And the enemies/bosses give you so many souls that you're overpowered by the late game the second time through. The level design in this game is pretty amazing. It feels organic and somehow tight at the same time. The shortcuts that you can unlock make a lot of sense and are less like a clover than Bloodborne's levels. They're so excellent.

Obviously, I liked this game or I wouldn't have re-played it. I really like the whole series quite a lot and if you're curious about the games, absolutely play them. They're so good! Dark Souls 2 is also pretty good, but in different ways. Play it!
