I beat Dragon Quest 1 recently, so why not dive into Dragon Quest 2, right?
Visuals: Almost identical to Dragon Quest 1. Literally looks like the same engine with MANY assets reused. Not bad considering it's a remake I suppose.
Audio: Almost identical to Dragon Quest 1 again! I mean, it's not a bad thing. They are using many of the more modern, iconic tracks to the series.
Gameplay: This is where the second entry really outshines the first. You have a party! You get to control 3 characters this time, which is definitely nicer. The characters are a Knight, a Mage, and a mixed class. There are a good amount of items to keep everything interesting and plenty of equipment to try out, some only fitting 1 or 2 of the 3. The strategy comes in with how you deal with your characters in a harmonious and sustainable way. I guess it's worth noting that I did have to grind a little before tackling the end boss, in true Dragon Quest fashion. It didn't take long as the enemies right outside the final dungeon give out a lot (3-4x) as much EXP as the ones proceeding them and are a logical step up in difficulty. I imagine this was changed in the remake to have the game eat up less of your time, but I'm not sure.
Story: The story is pretty cliche by 2016 eyes, but it might have been fresh by 1987 eyes? Monster destroys a town and our main character is the only survivor. He goes on a quest of vengeance and is aided by some friends. Turns out that your 3 characters are some sort of chosen ones, protected by the Goddess. She emphasizes that you've been chosen, but you still have to do a silly fetch quest for some sigils before she gives her blessing. I think that the writing in this game is pretty great though. The team responsible for localizing the DQ games has done a great job. I really like the wide variety of words chosen by the team. Many other RPGs speak so plainly in current day US-English that it kind of breaks the immersion, but the DQ games use British-English and use a lot of bigger words than normal, so it feels like a different place. It helps with the suspension of disbelief.
Overall, I enjoyed this kind of game so I enjoyed this game. If you don't like turn-based RPGs, I probably wouldn't recommend this one. If you want to get into the Dragon Quest series, I'd say this one was good! It's always interesting to see where a lot of our modern ideas in video games come from. [7/10]
