I noticed this game in my Steam library and wasn't sure how I got it (I suspect a humble bundle), so I decided to look into it. After checking the Steam store page, I decided to give it a download and a try.

Visuals: There's not a whole lot here. The game is very simple looking and crisp. You control a little shape that changes from a square, to a circle while moving sideways, and a triangle while jumping. You are in a blocky world and you are tasked with collecting little orbs while avoiding static.

Audio: Holy shit the music is so good. In the genre listing above I called this game a rhythm, platformer, but it would almost be better as a rhythm-platformer. The world around your little shape changes depending on the beats in the music. An additional change and subsequent beat is added each time you pick up an orb within a level. There are 3 levels and I think around 4 orbs per level, so each level begins very easy with simplistic music, but crescendos into a complex music score with more complicated platforming.

Story: N/A, there's not a word in the game.

Gameplay: The pacing in this game is spectacular. As I mentioned above, with each orb collected in each of the levels the music and platforming required become more complicated. There's not a word in the game, so there are no tutorials, but each of the orbs/beats added to the level is shown off in a safe way before asking the player to surmount it as an obstacle. The platforming in some places is a little tight, but what it asks of the player it does with ample checkpoints. I died a lot, but I never had to move more than 1 or 2 screens away to find where I died. This game teaches so well that many other games should look for this.

From what I understand, the creator of this game, Jeppe Carlsen, was a programmer on Limbo and decided to make a game that's quite the opposite. 140 is indeed the opposite. It's bright, colorful and includes a bumpin' soundtrack. The game is quite short, but it's a welcome diversion. I had a reaaaally rough time with the third and final boss, but the game never feels unfair until that point. And even then, I felt like it was my inability that kept me from completing the boss fight, there were just several things to juggle.

Overall, I really enjoyed this game. It was a great way to spend an hour, and there is a mirror mode that I could complete if I wanted additional challenge. 9/10
