Developer: Acid Nerve
Genre: Action, Third-person
Gameplay Stats: 2.5 hours, 19 Titans killed
I don't have a cute quip for the top section!
Visuals: This game is done in a pixel art style, and it's pretty beautiful. Probably some of the prettiest pixel art I've ever seen to be honest. There was a lot of detail put into the environment and the titans that you have to fight. This game is really, really pretty. I think my only complaint is that the main character's eyes are set so far apart on its head. I guess maybe the main character isn't human? Dunno.
Audio: The music in this game is similarly beautiful! The ambient music tracks for exploring are about perfect. They really give the limited exploring that you do in the game a perfect sense of belonging. Additionally, the boss music is similarly perfectly suited to the fights you're in. The sound effects are great. The crunch of the grass, the shifting of the soil. It's all great!
Gameplay: The gameplay in this game is pretty simple. You can move, dodge roll, and shoot. That's it! The controls are fairly tight, I wish you could alter the distance of the dodge roll, but that's a relatively minor complaint. You can even retrieve your single arrow by holding down the shoot button and standing still to let the arrow come to you! [Soviet Russia joke] I kind of wish there was a map for the whole island, but it would probably also ruin some of the mystique from exploring.
Story: For me, this was easily the least enjoyable part of the game. Nothing is given context. There are no names or stated goals. If I hadn't seen the trailer, I might legitimately have been confused at the beginning about what to do. It seems like there was a lot that could have been done here. [SPOILERS: After beating the final boss, I unlocked a new game mode that included translations. I suspect that this may reveal more story, but I don't really feel a desire to play the game a second time to understand the context. It seems to me like that's asking a lot of the player.]
In summation, I enjoyed this game. I liked playing it, and everything about the visuals and audio was beautiful. The lack of story or really anything substantial outside of the boss fights though is pretty underwhelming. I like the premise of the game, but I wanted a reason why I was doing what I was doing. It was a great way to spend a couple of hours, but I don't think I'd recommend it. 6.5/10
