Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

Genre: Stealth, Action, Shooter, Third person
Gameplay Stats: Around 15 hours, all bosses tranq'd

I actually completed this game a couple weeks ago, but I didn't get around to writing it up.

Visuals: This game looks a little dated, but with the updated textures of the HD re-release it actually almost looks like an early PS3 game. Despite looking like kind of old, everything was very easy to discern. The game looked its best while you are sneaking around a jungle scene with guards wandering around the map. The faces in the cut scenes weren't great, but they looked a great deal better than the previous games. It leaves me excited to see how Metal Gear Solid 4 looks when I start it.

Audio: The music in this game is pretty phenomenal. There isn't much of it, but when it is present, it's artistically significant and leaves an impression. The sound effects are similarly nice. I can't vouch for the gun sounds, but the footsteps and other effects are quite good. The voice acting is really good too! I can't think of any other games where I can pass on that praise. The highlight of the audio in the game is the James Bond style intro music that the developers made sure that you hear by making you climb a ladder for a couple minutes while the song plays.

Plot: I don't really know what to say about this one... It seems like this game was following the same trend of the plot making sense until around 75% of the way through the game where it goes through a fan and goes bonkers. That aside, the characters in this game make that part of the plot very memorable. The final boss of the game is Snake's mentor/lover, and seeing how their interactions and relationship unfolds over the course of the game is very interesting. These are some of the better characters that I have seen in video games.

Gameplay: The gameplay here is largely the same as the previous games, so I won't really cover the majority of the gameplay, I'll try to focus on the additions. The game has you switch different camouflage depending on your surroundings, which is kind of a pain. It was a solid step in the direction of realism, but I don't think I really liked it. It did give you the % camouflaged for each camo option though. The other big addition was that you had to hunt animals for food to keep a stamina meter up throughout the game. This might sound like just another thing to keep track of, but it actually heals you slowly over time depending on how much stamina you have. I quite liked it!

Overall I really enjoyed this game. I had heard that it was one of the best games of all time, and I can honestly see why it holds that reputation. This game was fantastic and I feel enriched for having experienced it. It's not my favorite game, but I'd absolutely recommend it to anyone even remotely interested. 9.5/10
