You may be thinking... "Ryan, it looks like you've hardly played this game! Are you sure you can review it?" Yes, yes I am sure. To be upfront an honest, I was a kickstarter backer of this game. Number 30234 if you want to find your name in the credits. The just under 4 hour long credits.
Visuals: This game does not really look like it was made by professionals. The backgrounds are all lovely, but the actual character models look like they were made by a novice, or at least not by someone with Keiji Inafune's name. When the game was announced for Kickstarter it had a way different aesthetic that I think was far superior. It was cell shaded and almost looked like a comic book or manga.
Audio: To start off with, I played the game with the Retro Soundtrack option enabled for the whole game, so that's the only soundtrack I can speak for. That being said, I enjoyed the soundtrack! The bits of audio that I have heard that are in the regular style are similarly enjoyable, but I haven't heard most of the tracks. The English voice acting is TERRIBLE. Like, low budget 90's anime bad. I switched to the Japanese voice acting and it was definitely seemed better since I don't have the kind of ear for quality in a language that I don't speak. The subtitles that popped up seemed kind of bad though. The sound effects seemed perfectly competent.
Plot: It was really bad. It seemed a lot like there wasn't an actual writer on the project, just some pretty trope-y writing. I wasn't expecting much since the Mega Man games' plot wasn't ever especially good, but man this one was bad. The characters didn't seem engaging and the overall story was told poorly. With a decent writer it might not have been so offensive. It's always possible that the story was lost in translation as well.
Gameplay: The controls work decently well, but I wouldn't call them tight controls by any means. The main McGuffin in the story is that your hero can dash through enemies to absorb their material and occasionally get power-ups. The levels don't seem to be made around this dash mechanic though as simply dashing through the air can bypass a large degree of the obstacles. To balance this, I suppose, there are a large degree of instakill traps and falls in the game. Some of the powerups actually mess up the platforming in the game by altering the distance that your dash covers. The bosses are underwhelming and pretty much represent all gaming/elemental stereotypes. If you were to look at a list of Pokemon types, you'd probably guess the correct 8 bosses.
Overall, this game is pretty mediocre. I think having the hype that it did largely detracted from the experience. If this was a new creator's first take on a Megaman style game it would be good, but coming from a veteran, it shows that he doesn't really understand what it is about his games that the fans enjoyed. This game largely missed the mark. 4.5/10
