I've been slacking on doing these the past couple months, but it's time to quit that! Of course, it doesn't help that I've been playing mostly multiplayer games. Anywho!
Visuals: This game looks really great for being a last gen game! The Fox Engine really is a work of art. Everything looks about half a generation ahead of it's time. For a PS3 game, it looks great! Almost bordering on a poor looking PS4 game. It's weird, but really good! Also worth noting here, is that they do all of the cutscenes in the game using the engine instead of pre-rendered stuff. Consequently the scenes don't look as nice as a lot of games, but it really improves the flow of the game quite a lot. I didn't like it at first, but it grows on you.
Audio: Holy shit, if there's a thing that this series consistently excels at, it is definitely sound and sound design. The song 'Old Snake' has easily risen towards the top of my favorite video game tracks of all time. You can hear mostly where enemies are around you and the sounds are all pretty crisp and clear. There's not a lot of music throughout the game, so the sound design really stands out while you're sneaking through areas full of guards or trying to avoid detection in a battlefield.
Plot: The plot of these games is kind of growing on me. Once you realize that they were written by a crazy man that defines things slightly differently than the dictionary and loves to use pseudoscience to make these grand conspiracies, it starts to be enjoyable. I wouldn't say that it's impactful at all, but it's amusing. There's a reason why the die hard fans of the series skip cutscenes on subsequent playthroughs.
Gameplay: Mechanically, this game is really good! There is a nice balance of video game-y things and realistic things. The controls are different than any other game in the series and are a bit wonky, but really that's my only complaint. The visual language of the game, the sound design, and the maps are all really interesting. The Octocamo that automatically changes to match your surroundings is a large quality of life improvement from having to change camo often in the previous game.
Overall, I liked this game a great deal! I'll probably never watch any of the cutscenes again, but I may revisit this game for the gameplay and set design. 9/10
