The Messenger: Picnic Panic DLC

I finished The Messenger a few months ago and wrote up my thoughts. They just released a free DLC for the game called Picnic Panic and I wanted to share my thoughts on it.

This DLC is pretty short, I think it took me about 3-4 hours to complete. I got all but one of the achievements (f*ck Star Messenger) and read through all of the dialogue. The story here doesn't really matter, but what does matter is that this is a logical extension of the end of the game. I think you can access the new content when the game becomes non-linear I believe, but difficulty wise I think it fits better at towards the end of the game. I didn't google a darn thing in my original play through, but I did google one of the collectibles in this DLC.

I really think that this was a return to form for the game. It got back to the snarky shopkeeper and the bits of self-awareness and randomness that made the first half of the game so fun, but it married that with the difficulty of some of the later half of the game. I really enjoyed this and cannot recommend it enough considering it was free. They added a couple new mechanics like a Battletoads-esque surfing section and a Punch-Out-esque boss fight (so hot right now, looking at you Enter The Gungeon). I think these changed up the pace very well and kept me on my toes.

It seems like the developers really understood what was liked (and disliked) about their original game and gave more of that to the fans. My only gripe here is that moving around within the DLC could've used a better warp. As it stands, you have to leave the DLC and return to the main game and then return back to the DLC at a different part of the map. Literally my only complaint. I'll forego a numerical score for this since it was only a small chunk of DLC, but I highly recommend this in addition to the base game.
