I picked this game up in the hopes of getting some more of that Dark Souls magic. This game is very clearly inspired by Dark Souls, it's got tough combat, a world that wraps around onto itself, and is an action RPG!
In a broad scope, this game hits all of the same points, but that definitely wasn't my experience here. The combat feels really weighty! All of the weapons take a long time to swing, but the characters do actually look like they are handling heavy ass weapons. Unfortunately, this means that the combat is really slow. I don't know if maybe I was doing something wrong, but my experience was that I would block and attack and then try to attack back. The enemy would recoil from hitting my shield for a second, but would recover and put their own shield up before my mace was anywhere near connecting with them. Maybe I was supposed to parry absolutely all of the enemies? My experience was that I ended up leaning hard on a spell that reflected damage and healed me. I was actually super overpowered using this spell and unable to take down enemies with a shield without it. Without back stab fishing anyway, which feels kind of cheap to me. But I couldn't really do much damage otherwise! It was a hot mess. I feel like I misunderstood how to play somehow. I stomped the tutorial area and then the rest of the game that I explored felt poorly designed. There's no way that they actually intended the combat to be like this.
The world seemed interesting, if a bit edgy, but the combat really brought the whole thing down in my opinion. I just don't get the appeal of playing a game that's this slow and dull. The part of Dark Souls combat that makes it satisfying is that it's quick and decisive. This game missed that note and it really shows. I didn't enjoy my short time with this game and I won't be returning to it. (I don't think)
