The third campaign in Shovel Knight! The game originally released in 2013 and finally ended support in 2020 so they can move on to their next project. I backed this game on Kickstarter and haven't been disappointed yet! Will Specter of Torment be the first?
Kinda, yeah. I think the story is stronger here than it has been in the previous expansions, but the way the game is set up it doesn't really let the story shine. They decided to hold to the previous patterns, where you get a dash of story every few levels, so they really dont let the best part of this expansion shine. They did a cool kind of Tarantino type story telling where you start as Specter Knight and then figure out how he came to be in his predicament. This is a weird kind of prequel to Shovel Knight, but realistically it doesn't seem like anything meaningfully changes between Specter and Shovel Knight's journey through the world. Which is a weird combination when the story of the game is such a strength.
The visuals are very similar to the previous expansions, which is good. They did slightly remix the levels and their music, but I don't think I liked any of the new songs or layouts more than their previous iterations. This game has some really strong roots that kind of keep this particular expansion from soaring. I really really liked Shovel Knight, but I think Specter of Torment would have done better if it had eschewed more of the conventions laid down the the original story and cemented by Plague of Shadows. [6.5/10]
