Release: 2012, 2019
Developer/Publisher: Nintendo
Genre: Platformer
Gameplay Stats? No idea. Nintendo makes this a pain to find out and I'm not that invested in finding it for a Mario game.
Before I begin it's important to note that I only played the Mario side of this two-pack for Nintendo Switch. I'll probably play through the Luigi adventure at some point, but that point isn't now!
Visuals: This game is pretty cute looking! As are all Mario games. Nintendo has a really solid style for this series and I think they kept to that pretty strongly here. Everything fits and looks great. I can't say that this is the most beautiful Nintendo game I've ever played, but it's nice. I think that comes across in the trailers and the marketing materials very well.
Audio: The music here is also nice! Ditto to the sound effects. There isn't any voice acting to speak of, so no notes on that front. I think Nintendo plays it a bit safe in this game, there aren't any tracks that I will seek out and listen to now that I'm through the game. I also didn't find any sound effects that I was interested in setting as my text tone.
Gameplay: Pretty much exactly what you'd expect here! It's a Mario game with "New" in the title, so the controls are a little slippery and you can twist while you're in the air to extend your jumps a bit. Nothing groundbreaking and nothing that hasn't been seen in their previous titles. You can catch Nabbit which is always fun, but it's made a little trivial if you enter the chase levels with a Star.
Plot: Nothing to see here. Your princess is in another castle.
Overall I walked away with pretty middling feelings about this game. It's a Mario game, and more broadly a Nintendo game, so you know the quality is there. You know what to expect before you get into it. This game is solid, but it plays it really safe. While I was playing this I had Mario Odyssey in mind and I recently played through Spelunky 2 (still kinda playing it). I feel like this game is underwhelming in comparison to either of those titles. It's just far too safe.
Score: 6/10
Recommend? Not really unless you really want a Mario game
