Super Mario Galaxy [revisit]

Another revisit so it'll just be a quick write up.

Super Mario Galaxy is really good! I was stoked to be able to buy and play it on the Switch. The levels are still really strong! The movement, particularly the camera feel a bit dated after playing Mario Odyssey, but that makes since after 14 years of progress. The levels are fun and they introduce new enemies/interactions/gimmicks at a pretty rapid rate. It's a solid Mario game!

I do have a couple of lingering issues with the game though that I want to point out. The first is one I've touched on before with the plot. All of these games are only about saving Princess Peach. Helping the damsel in distress has been Nintendo's go-to plot for decades now and I think it's time to change up the formula. The plot doesn't matter any more here than it does in Zelda games, but it's for that exact reason that they need to change it up. The could use literally any McGuffin. The other thing that really bothered me playing on the Switch was that motion controls are required for so much of the inputs. Menus only function by pointing and clicking which is really strange in 2021. I guess accessibility wasn't as big of a concern, but it still felt weird. Playing with a WiiMote back when the game originally released felt pretty good since the remote was made for pointing. Doing all of the pointing and gesturing with a two handed Pro Controller was mighty odd though. I guess there weren't multiple controllers to work around in 2008.

Anyway, still a gem of a game! Doesn't age as well as it could, but most games don't I'd still give it an [8/10].
