I got a chance to revisit this game as part of a game club! Like a book club but for video games. I played this originally back in maybe 2014 as one of the first games I played with a controller on PC and I remember really liking it.
On the revisit I gotta say, the gameplay is good but everything else is kind of bad. The writing is clunky and needed an editor to slash about 60% of it. The plot twist at the end was foreshadowed about 20% into the game so strongly that I didn't realize it was supposed to be a revelation until the characters were SUPER surprised by it. The menu-ing is atrocious, you need to do a lot of it and it's really clunky. Like Final Fantasy level clunky but in an action game for some reason. They even have crafting and skill points that don't really matter very much? It really feels like a more modern Ubisoft/EA game where they "had to check all the boxes" so they included a bunch of disjointed stuff. The combat is pretty fun, but everything else here isn't great.
The game is hand drawn which looks pretty nice but it does make it hard to read the edges of things. I think my only issues were some of the enemies in the last zone, they throw way too many of them at you and they don't telegraph their attacks very much solo, much less if they're in a large group. This seems like it was a team's first video game and I think it shows. They had a lot of passion, but I think the vision was a bit more than they were able to successfully pull off.
I'd have a really hard time recommending this game in 2022. I don't think this was a bad experience but there are so many games that do what this game was attempting to do with more success.
