Steam Next Fest Demos

A week of demos for a whole bunch of upcoming games! I tried 3.

Darkest Dungeon 2
I was a huge fan of the first Darkest Dungeon game but the little I watched on YouTube about this game made me kind of hesitant. I approached the demo a bit hesitantly and I walked away unconvinced. I don't really like the wagon, it seems like it adds fluff a wonderfully dense game. I understand wanting the change of venue/style, but I don't think this adds anything. I do like the branching paths, but not being able to set an auto destination is kind of annoying. You are incentivized to steer the cart into debris for a chance at small treasures, but I was offput by the whole thing. The combat though is just as neat as I remember and I did enjoy that part very thoroughly. I am going to watch more people play when the game releases in May.

Mika and the Witch's Mountain
I hadn't heard of this game but it looked cute. Did not disappoint! Seems like a chill game version of Kiki's Delivery Service. You are a little witch that flies around a little island delivering things to the inhabitants of the island. Doesn't seem to be any combat or anything. The music and visuals were both very relaxing. A Short Hike vibes! Apparently it's on Kickstarter but I don't think I'll back it. I will keep an eye out for it when it releases though.

The Last Case of Benedict Fox
A metroidvania! Kinda? It looks like a mixture of a metroidvania and a mystery game. Where you collect clues and use them to unlock progress forward and more about the game world. It's pretty interesting! I don't think the combat was very interesting, but that's not unusual at the start of a metroidvania. I like this genre mashup though, another one to keep an eye on. Maybe watch someone playa little farther in the game or read some reviews.

I really miss being able to try a demo of a game. It seems like it was so much more common in the past. Yay Steam though!
