Game club game! I actually stopped playing this game about 6 months ago but was going back and forth on whether or not I'd compete it. I finally decided against it.

Aesthetics: This game looks and sounds great, exactly like you'd want a AAA game released this year to look and sound. All of the character models look and move wonderfully. The zombie/monster bits are all creepy and you dread seeing them in each new enemy encounter. The barks from the enemies get a little same-y but otherwise I really don't have much to complain about on this front.

Plot: You are a secret agent type guy who is sent into the field to rescue the president's daughter. It seems like she was just abducted by a cult so one guy can do the trick but you very soon find out that the cult is turning people in monsters through some kind of mutant plague. The story bits are pretty expected and campy. I don't have much negative to say about the story if I'm being honest. It was a fun time. The bits I played with my wife were funny and she actually enjoyed the cutscenes.

Gameplay: Ryan, that sounds like a lot of praise for a game you won't complete. What gives? Well, this game plays like ass. I understand that it's a deliberate choice by the developers to make it seem like your character is a tank who has never walked a day in his life, but I really dislike it. Everything is crazy sluggish and it feels like Leon (main character) is wading through a swamp at all times. In the cutscenes he is acrobatic and moves like he is a trained secret agent, when you control him it feels like walking is a new trick that he's learned. It's jarring. I understand that this is in service of the game being a horror game, but why make the main character a trained secret agent who can do flips in the cutscenes if he struggles to reload his standard issue pistol? If you want the character to feel sluggish it would go a long way to make there be a reason why he is so sluggish.

Ultimately I found no joy in piloting Leon from one plot point to the next. I enjoyed the story and the game looks beautiful, but I don't see a reason to continue playing if I don't enjoy the meat of the experience. I supposed I should've bumped the difficulty down to easy sooner so I would finish the game, but I really didn't enjoy my time here. I know that's a relative hot take, but it's just my opinion.
