Super Mario Wonder

Release: 2023
Developer/Publisher: Nintendo
Gameplay Stats: All wonder seeds, ~15 hours?

I don't really want to get into the basics here, I suspect people know what they're getting into with a 2d Mario game. But what did I think about it? It was really good! After the middling experience that was the New Super Mario series, Nintendo really doubled down and gave us something new and fresh. The gameplay is fast and feels good. Most levels have a Wonder Seed in them which flips the gameplay around. Sometimes Mario turns into a ball and has to roll around, sometimes there's an enemy stampede and the rest of the level is an auto-scroller, and a few times the enemies sing to you. It's always delightful and there is a surprising amount of variation between all of them. It's weird that Nintendo delivered a fresh feeling Mario game in 2023, but they really did. Definitely a good time!

A couple other things I wanted to note. First is that the plot didn't involve Peach being kidnapped! She is actually a playable character which is always fun. This game incorporates badges but I didn't mess around with them as much as maybe I should have. I tried many of them in the badge challenges but I didn't mess around with many of them. Finally I found the challenge to be a little easy. I did all of the levels and didn't really run into any troubling ones. The most lives I spent were on the special levels and didn't find any where I needed more than a handful. I would not say this interfered with my enjoyment of the game at all.
